Glass igloos and other special accommodations are often thought of as a Lappish thing, but in fact, similar places can be found all over Kainuu Arctic Lakeland! Here, prices are cheaper and the places are not overcrowded with masses of tourists. Most of the guesthouses featured in this article are small family-run businesses.
Browsing accommodation options can be a hassle, especially if you are not familiar with all the options Kainuu has to offer. Don’t worry! I wrote this article to help you in your search. I am a tourism professional from Kuhmo and I know Kainuu’s accommodation and couples’ needs well.
In this article, I’ll show some small love nests that share stunning scenery and good reviews. Some of these small cottages are also equipped with a sauna and/or outdoor pool.

Arctic Giant – Jättiläisenmaa – Birdhouse apartments for couples who love the peace and quiet of nature
Arctic Giant * is located in Paltamo on top of Kivesvaara hill and it is especially easy to reach for travellers coming from Oulu.
The place is known for som its birdhouse cottages* with huge, full-wall windows. The windows offer a magnificent view of Lake Kivesjärvi, with Lake Oulujärvi in the distance.
Each apartment comes with a sauna. The saunas also have windows, so you can look out over the landscape even while you bathe. Some of the apartments also include outdoor pools!
The place is particularly suitable for couples who appreciate peace and quiet and nature activities. The Kivesvaara hiking trails start right next to the hotel. Jättiläisenmaa also has its own rental shop, where you can rent snowshoes, fatbikes or even a canoe. The location is not the most optimal for downhill skiers, as there are no ski slopes in Paltamo.
The Arctic Giant is also perfect for you if you dream of seeing the Northern Lights. The site is remote from the centre of Paltamo, so there is very little light pollution. In addition, from the high vantage point you can see far into the northern sky.

Arctic Lake experience – Oulujärvi igloo – in peace and quiet by the Kainuu Sea
This igloo accommodation * can be found in Kajaani Vuoreslahti, which is about a 20-minute drive from the centre of Kajaani. It’s on the southern shore of Lake Oulujärvi, so you can see the northern lights and starry sky very well. Reviewers praise the place* especially for the peaceful location and the view from the windows.
In summer, the place makes a great base for a beach holiday – you can see the stunning Ärjänsaari Island from the igloo window and you can book a boat transfer to spend a day on Ärjä’s stunning sandy beaches or hiking trails. When you return to the igloo, you can let the lapping of the waves lull you to sleep. In summer, the igloo floats on the water!
In winter, the igloo rests on an ice cover. You can practice winter sports, for example the Vuottolahti skating track and cross-country skiing trails are nearby. When planning a sports holiday, please note that there is no shower in the igloo. However, there is a sauna building near the igloo where you can book a private shift.
Breakfast is delivered in a basket directly to the igloo. You also have the possibility to order a dinner for an extra fee. There is no kitchen in the igloo, but it is possible to have a barbecue outside for self-cooking. In addition to a minibar, the igloo has a cooler for your own snacks.

Arctic Lakeland igloos in Vuokatti – stunning lake scenery and plenty of activities
The Arctic Lakeland igloos* are located in a beautiful lake landscape between the centre of Sotkamo and Vuokatti. The freshly decorated igloos have glass walls and ceilings, so you can admire both the lake and the starry sky from inside. Each igloo also has a high-quality sound system, so you can brighten up your evening by listening to music.
In addition to the beautiful décor, the igloos are equipped with a kitchenette and a bathroom. Each igloo also has an outdoor hot tub, which you can use for an additional fee. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a glass of wine in the hot tub, in the company of a loved one? There is also a separately rentable beach sauna on site.
Vuokatti’s ski slopes, hiking trails, spa and other diverse services are a five-minute drive away. Hiidenportti National Park is a 45-minute drive from the site.
Critics praise* that the igloo is warm even in cold weather and the bathroom is spacious. One reviewer says that he has tested many igloos and he thinks that Vuokatti igloo was the best of all!

Ukkohalla Sky cabin – reach the skiing slopes right from the front door!
Sky cabin* is for you who want it all – a quiet location, but still close to services. These apartments are located in Ukkohalla at the top of the ski slopes. The sauna world, restaurant and other services are down the slope. You can get to the slopes right from the cottage yard and at the end of the day you can return to your accommodation by ski lift!
In the Ukkohalla area you can also easily enjoy the silence of the forest and the magnificent waterfalls. Take a hike on the Mustarinda nature trail or head to the magnificent Komulanköngäs waterfall.
It’s also a great place to admire the northern lights. The cottages are high enough that nearby hills do not obscure the view of the northern sky.

Lake Resort Paljakka – relax in the outdoor pool and take a sauna in a milk dock
Paljakka Lake resort cabins* are located just 400 metres from the facilities of the Paljakan ski resort, on the southern shore of Lake Rakennusjärvi. The location is quiet and the large windows offer a great view of the lake and the northern lights.
There is a sauna and an outdoor hot tub. The cottage is praised by reviewers for* especially the neat outdoor pool, from which you can admire the scenery, especially in winter. The kitchen is also well equipped.
If you want to take a sauna, there is also a sauna courtyard next to the cottages, where you can find several special saunas, such as a milk-dock sauna and a sauna with a lanscape view! The sauna yard is also on the shore of the lake, so you can also try ice swimming if you dare. There is a small extra charge for using the saunas, the beach area is free of charge during the general shift.
Guests staying at the Lake Resort can rent snowmobiles and fatbikes at a reduced rate. Paljakka also has good ski trails and fishing opportunities. The ski slopes of Paljakka are currently closed, but you can go skiing at Ukkohalla, a 20-minute drive away.
